Our coaches

Four coaches. Seventeen dan grades between them. All former competitors.

“In October 2015, Yuan Power took in a group of white belts.
Ten years later, two of them coach here.”

Founder

Yuan Ming-che, 7th dan

Yuan Ming-che founded Yuan Power Taekwondo in 2015. He has coached since 2010 and graduated from National Taiwan Normal University.

He trained in this same dojang as a high school student. From 2002 to 2004 he won gold at the National High School Games three years in a row. In 2015, his own coach retired and asked him to come back and take over. So those three gold medals say something about this place, too: it has produced a national champion before.

He won gold three years running at three different levels: high school, university, and the National Games. Internationally, he took silver at the 2008 Asian Taekwondo Championships.

In 2021, Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Taichung City Government for coaching a student who won silver at the 27th National Junior Taekwondo Championships. His results show he could fight. The certificate shows he can teach.

Today he also trains the coaches. Once or twice a month, he runs a session for the whole coaching team: how to teach young children, technique and poomsae standards, safety and injury care, conditioning, competition tactics, and talking with parents. Whichever coach your child gets, they are working to the same standard.

Head coach

Lai Kuan-yu, 4th dan

In October 2015, just after Yuan Power opened, Lai Kuan-yu walked in wearing a white belt. Ten years later, he is the head coach.

Yuan Ming-che coached him the whole way. He placed second at the National High School Games in 2018, second at the Korea Open the same year, and third at the Malaysia Open in 2019. He graduated from National Taiwan University of Sport, where he studied combat sports, and has coached since 2020.

Parents of three- to six-year-olds often ask whether the coaches can handle children that young. Lai holds a Level C early-childhood fitness instructor certificate. He also teaches taekwondo at three local elementary schools that partner with us.

Coach

Chen Yi-en, 3rd dan

Chen Yi-en started as a white belt in October 2015, the same month as Lai Kuan-yu. She has trained without a break for eleven years, longer than any other current student.

When Yuan Ming-che coached the taekwondo team at Focus Junior High School (福科國中) in Xitun, she was the team's first captain. In 2025 she came back to Yuan Power to teach the next group of children.

She is currently studying sport and health sciences at National Taiwan University of Sport. She already coaches, but she still trains in the Advanced Class as a student. Her next goal is the National Intercollegiate Athletic Games.

As a small child she was often unwell. After she started taekwondo, her mother says, she had far fewer allergies and colds. That is her mother's observation, and every child is different. One of her strengths is teaching young children.

Coach

Wu Chun-ping, 3rd dan

Wu Chun-ping graduated from National Taiwan University of Sport, where he studied combat sports, and served in the ROC Armed Forces Honor Guard. The honor guard demands discipline, posture and composure under pressure. Those are the same things many parents hope taekwondo will give their children.

He has coached since 2022 at a taekwondo school in Changhua County, and at a kindergarten and an elementary school in Taichung. He has taught everyone from kindergartners to elementary school students.

In 2025 he won first place at both the Fuzhou and Pingtan stages of the 13th Cross-Strait Taekwondo Exchange Tournament, the same year and the same event as Lai Kuan-yu. He also holds a Level C senior fitness instructor certificate. Adults who want to start from zero can join our Basic Class or Weekend Class.
